Question about Joan and Stephanie's British English #1 (permalink) Mon Jun 21, 2004 22:16 pm   Question about Joan and Stephanie's British English

Hello there,

I have a question about the RP of Joan Collins and Stephanie Beacham. Now, if you ask me, Stephanie Beacham speaks British English marvellously, or at least she sound wonderfully British, however, being of British origin, Joan Collins doesn't sound British anymore at all. Ofcourse, you can hear she's British when she pronounces words like 'can't' and 'shan't'. I was wondering, does she have what people sometimes call ' the Mid Atlantic' accent? And is Stephanie Beacham's English really RP English?

Hi,

If you want my opinion it's just a matter of taste. The more variety the better - the main thing is can the speaker be understood? If everyone spoke the same way, how boring life would be! Incidentally, RP or received pronunciation is a bit oldfashioned these days.

Hi Alan,

It's very good you say that because there are people who learn English as a second language and they will always have their own accent. I sometimes watch CNN and I can hear differents accents there too.
