Hello Alan,
Many thanks for your essay. I found lot of interesting things after looking into thoroughly the awkward pair of 'person and people'. Only some: person = individual, human, human being, figure, soul, character;(inf)type(humorous) mortal
collocations: average person normal person ordinary person key person powerful person person in charge independent person right person for sth wrong person spokesperson salesperson VIP people person=who enjoys to talk to other people etc. illustrative sentences: The virus is spread from person to person. What are you like as a person? He is a warm but a very private person.
idioms: 1.in the person of sb Help arrived in the person of my teacher. 2.be no respecter of persons Death is no respecter of persons. be not respecter of persons=to treat everyone in the same way without being influenced by their importance etc.
People =(inf.) folk
I don't care what people think of me.
collocations:
young people/folk elderly people/folk rich people/folk poor people/folk black people/folk white people/folk city people/folk =townspeople country people/folk local people/ folk people (pl) so the verb after it is always in plural form.
peoples= nation In this course there are lot of American people who can't make a distinction between the American English and British English. These people think only the American English is correct.
idiom: 1.People (who live) in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. 2.man of the people You are not only a teacher but also a man of the people.= a man who understands and is sympathetic to ordinary people.
