Well, I don't understand the meaning, but it seems hunny for me. It is too short to give enough information about the meaning... so I guess it is a joke :) If we speak about Arnold's quotes I like this one: "Failure is not an option. Everyone has to succeed." |

The joke is changing the word "guess" from a clothing brand name to an implied question.
A commonly joked about excuse for being overweight is that the overweight person believes they are only overweight due to a "thyroid problem" when it has more to do with their eating or exercise habits.
So for this quote, the viewer in the quote is presuming that the word 'guess' on the shirt represents the question "guess why I am overweight", to which the viewer replies, "thyroid problem?". |

Can somebody help me out here? I got confused with the following phrases:
"wave to" or "wave at"? (Are they practically the same? Or, some distinctions are found on particular occasions?)
# He waves to / at the audience. (-.-)??
"call on" or "call for"?
# He went to the town to call for / on a doctor. (-.-)?? |

Insomnia_f nice quote :) ,how about this : "Everybody pities the weak; jealousy you have to earn" otherwise "Здрасти" .
BFord thank you very much ! I haven't known that the overweight in USA is due to thyroid problems for most of the fat women. Now when I see a woman with "guess" written on the t-shirt I know what to presume. |

Borislav, to clarify my earlier statement. The overweight problem in the United States is rarely due to a thyroid problem, in my opinion. It is typically caused by lazy eating habits just like anywhere else.
The reason that it has caught on as a joke is because you will see someone who is eating a large quantity of fattening foods claim that it is not their fault that they are overweight, rather that it is the "thyroid problem" that is causing it. The casual observer can tell it is their eating habits that are the real cause.
As far as seeing a women wearing a "guess" T-Shirt. In this case the word is spelled "GUESS". It is a proper noun and is the name & trademark of a clothing designer. It has no other meaning then to let the observer know what company made the shirt.
Arnold's joke is complex in that it works under two understood presumptions. 1) that the word "GUESS" is a question and not a trademark. - false 2) that the women wearing the shirt is overweight - true
Unfortunately the premise of the joke is that we should laugh simply because the women is overweight. Mis-using the word "GUESS" is only the vehicle that is used to allow us to understand that she is overweight without saying it overtly. |
