Brad Pit speaks like an Irish Gypsy
The English call them "Pikeys"
The Narrator and the smaller English man are both "Cockneys"
But the big English man sounds like he's from northern England

Listen out for "Do you like dogs"?

The Scousers (Comedy clip)

Scouser is a nickname for someone from Liverpool (Like the Beatles)

Listen for "com'ed" which is short for "come on ahead"(lets fight)

Harry Enfield as "Loads a Money" a "Cockney" (From London)

Speaking with a "Cockney accent"

Hello all,

I would like to add for my fellow non-native speakers that Irish Travelers are not Gypsies. Irish Travelers refer to themselves as Pavees. They are often called "Tinkers" by non-travelers. Derogatory terms are Pikey and Gypos. They are not even remotely related to the Romani people in other parts of Europe. Romani refer to themselves as Roma, and in the German speaking nations as Sinti. Even though the lifestyle of the Irish Travelers and the Gypsies is similar, they are two completely different ethnic groups. The word Gypsy may be derogatory to some of the Romani, but the ones I went to school with never took offense when they were called Gypsy and usually referred to themselves as such.

In the movie, the Irish Travelers are being called Gypsies, which is, in fact, wrong and derogatory. I like that movie, but it's just a movie.

Don't get too funky with your accents or else you might find that you need subtitles to be understood. Think Susan Boyle..

Cgk, do the romani people have citizenship? Or are they just stateless people moving from country to country?

Hello Blue113,

the Sintis in Germany have German citizenship. They also have the Sinti Allianz Deutschland (German Sinti Association), which protects and maintains Sinti culture and traditions within Germany.

P.S. You may call me Claudia :-)

........Claudia Leibling - Why do u like being the Kill Joy playing these semantic Games?

I lived in Knocknacarra Galway(City of the Tribes) for a couple of years and know plenty of travelers or as many call each other "Knackers" - it makes me yawn when I hear this crap all over again 20 years later.. and your assertion about Romania is nuts! - what have west Indians got to do with real Indians in India - sweet FA
They were given the name west Indians and thats it all there is to it.

In the USA in the last Century there was 4 or five different words for what is now acceptably called (I think) African American.

At one stage "Niger" was the correct term. - And probably at the time it was no big deal... However after 20 or 30 years of everyday use the word became stigmatized and a new word was then chosen as acceptable - then after 20 or more years each subsequent word became stigmatized. - Yet after all this time its clear that a lot of "brothers" call themselves "Nigers" - Its probably for the same reason as a Belfast Catholic I often refer to myself as a Fenian or a Taigue.

When I look in a gold fish bowl I see a gold fish - the gold fish doesn't know its a Goldfish and even if it did it wouldn't be able to remember it was one. But just say it did ? and just say it didn't like the name Gold fish ? - I would still call it a Goldfish in spite of what some politically correct politician trying to take control of things might think...

And if its "Just a movie"why are you off on one?

The Actors/Film makers and I used the word Gypsy and your the first complaint I've ever heard about it so remind me to put this in the file marked "Things I don't give a xyz about" :-)

Jamie,

I was not speaking to you when I posted this information. This is a forum for English learners, and it isn't a good idea to teach them words that are derogatory to specific ethnic groups and also to spread misinformation about them.

Please refrain from calling me Leibling (which is, by the way spelled, Liebling) and other names. I'm neither your girlfriend nor your drinking buddy. Also, don't take everything so personally. I wasn't criticizing you (nor the movie, for that fact). Please stay objective. You really need to calm down.

Or are you now going to bully everyone out of this forum who does not share your views and dares to disagree with you?

Claudia

Bullying?? don't make me laugh!!

Excuse me but you are completely subjective

You are the one who is criticizing and wasting far too much text doing so.

You were criticizing my post and I say it again

Stop playing silly semantic games

Please stay on topic (which is the video and not "me")

Treat me and everyone here with respect, and there won't be a problem and we'll all stay on topic. I'm not playing games, neither semantic nor any other ones. I don't even know how you got that idea.

Semantic is word play - like saying you didn't criticize me - when clearly you did via the Clip - Its like a child arguing when its time for bed.

Why can't you just have a laugh instead of lecturing people and pretending to save the learners on the Website from a fate worse than death.

You may think your English is great Claudia but to me your an open book.

My Mother used to say "If you haven't good anything nice to say" you know rest.

And as far as I'm concerned if people keep seeing various things in a negative context it says more about them then any point their trying to make.

Verstehen Sie mich?

I know what semantic games are and I told you that I wasn't playing any.
I told you I wasn't criticizing you, but you keep saying I did. Are you calling me a liar? Nowhere in my first and original post did I ever address YOU or rebuked you.

The reason why I posted this information about the difference between Irish Travelers and Gypsies is that many non-natives simply do not know this. I have found myself in embarrassing situations more than once because here and there I picked up a word that was offensive but was used as if it were a regular term. I have offended people because I didn't know the terms were offensive. I do not hold this against the native speakers, because they were in their own environment as they said them. But you are here on a forum that teaches English. If the language coaches here get upset when someone types "i" instead of "I" or doesn't use a period at the end of a sentence, why then, would it be all right to use derogatory words carelessly, as though they were regular terms? When you are speaking to non-native English speakers, you have to be more careful of what you say.

"You may think your English is great Claudia but to me your an open book." What is that supposed to mean? Are you now holding my English against me? Are you holding against me that I'm not a native English speaker?

"Why can't you just have a laugh?"
About what? About your racist and sexist statements, which you oh-so-cleverly wrap up as jokes, so anyone who objects to them looks like a humorless fool?

I have enough of this. "Verstehen Sie Mich?" I asked you to treat me with respect, but I see that you are incapable of doing so. There is no reason why I should respond to you any longer.

Claudia

Claudia's English is actually very good. Just thought I would point that out.

In the USA, the "N" word is actually considered derogatory by all accounts. It may not be considered derogatory in the past (100 years ago) but it is definately demeaning in the current world we live in.

Hey Claudia, if the Romani people do have citizenships, then why do they travel from countries to countries? Or do they even do that?
