When do babies start to smile real smiles?

Just wondering if anyone could share their experiences with when their babies smiled for the first time.

My son is 4.5 weeks old and I am so anxious to see him smile a real smile! He gets gas smiles all the time but I want to see him recognize something and smile that big gummy smile! :-D

When can I expect to see that?!

The first smiles of my two children are in the distant past, far too long ago to have recall as to their real origin. LOL.

I clearly recall that my daughter used to smile when she looked at the trees above her when being wheeled in her pram. (Heart-warming memories.)

When we talked about children smiling into the distance, my grandmother used to say that very young children had the ability to see things and people that we couldn't.

I don't know about the reality of that statement, but it is certainly food for thought.
