Late in life = old age
later in life = any time after now.

Compare:

Col. Sanders had very little success until late in life when he founded his KFC restaurant chain.

John said he likes kids, but will put off having a family till later in life.

Late in life is more set whereas later in life is relative. Someone who is 90 yeas old can still put something off till later in life.
