Hi Heba,

You're quite right when you say you can't guess and I would suggest you get a good dictionary like: THE ADVANCED LEARNER'S DICTIONARY PUBLISHED BY OXFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS and then you can look up for example turn and you will see how this verb + certain prepositions can take on different meanings like the one in the sentence turn down meaning reject/refuse. These constructions are called phrasal verbs (turn off/over/in/down). If you like, you can go to the heading on this site called ESL LESSONS and you can see other examples of phrasal verbs in stories that I've written to show how they are used.
