Hi everyone, can you please tell me how you would translate 'Montage und Service'? We are talking about a department of a company that produces louver window systems and provides all the fitting, mounting, maintenance and service.

Many thanks,
Torsten

Probably 'Installation and Maintenance'.

It could be "installation and maintenance", as Micawber said, but it could also be "installation and service".

It depends on what the Germans mean by "Service". Sometimes they mean maintenance, sometimes they mean repair, and sometimes it's hard to figure out WHAT they mean by the word.

My favorite is when a German company has a "Service-Dienst", which I guess is a service service, a service that provides you service.

Hello Charles and Jamie, thanks a lot for your suggestions. What about 'installation and maintenance services'? Would that be a tautology? Also, how would you translate 'Produktionsvorbereitung' when describing a company department? Is that 'pre-production' or 'production preparation', or 'production prep' or simply 'production'?

Many thanks,
Torsten

"Installation and maintenance services" is not a tautology. Use it.

I think "pre-production" is the best name for the type of department you're talking about.

Most of the German to English manuals from siemens tend to translate montage as either assembly or contruction. Reperatur would normally be repair but when you see service in lieu of dienst it's always a bit confusing to me because I wonder whether they mean service in the sense equivalent to dienst or if it's a different meaning like repair or installation.

For the second I would use a more direct translation like 'preproduction quality assurance'.

Am I understanding the German term correctly that this is the department which verifies the quality of parts and materials before they are sent to the assembly teams?

If it's a business-to-business set-up or business-to-consumer, "Montage" can be installation, assembly or mounting. I don't usually see it as the equivalent of construction. For example, when something that is bolted to the wall and hooked up to electricity or air vents, that is "Montage".

"Service" in German is definitely "service" in English, in the sense of a maintenance and repair service. When you see "Service-Dienst", it means something to the effect of "maintenance and repair service".

"Reparatur" is the physical act of repairing something, whereas "Service" and sometimes "Kundendienst" are usually the service of providing the repairs.

There's usually not space for a long circumlocution like that. A "pre-production" department may not handle just quality assurance, but also logistics and general supply chain issues.
