increase vs. improve/ attempt vs. aim #1 (permalink) Mon Feb 15, 2010 8:24 am   increase vs. improve/ attempt vs. aim

Hi,

I have a question on the difference between improve and increase.

a. How can I improve my writing skills?
b. How can I increase my writing skills?

In general, I think "a" is more acceptable. It means I'm thinking about how I could write more fluent and persuasive way, for example. However, b is sensible in a way that the speaker might wonder how s/he could get the more ways of writing- how to write an essay, how to write a short story, or how to writie an article for a newspaper. What do you think?

Also, I have some wonder how attempt and aiming are different:

c. If you’re attempting to become a doctor, you’ll have to study hard.
d. If you’re aiming to become a doctor, you’ll have to study hard.

They looks similar to me. "d" is more goal-oriented to me, but anyway, "c" is also have the same meaning after all. What do you think?

Thanks,
sweetpumpkin

increase is an intransitive verb so only My skill is increasing is possible. Attempt has the same meaning as try but you should compare the 2 with effort and manage. Aim is like purpose.
