hello,
i met two words that i find difficult to understand..(traffic islands)..is there anything called like that or is it just feguritively used?

A traffic island is quite real-- it is a space in the midst of the roadway (often at an intersection) which helps to direct or control traffic or offers a refuge or waiting place for pedestrians, because you can't drive on it: it is often raised and landscaped.
