Hi All,
Which one is correct for statement in below?
Are you providing food to him? Do you provide food to him?
In what kind of situation, we will use "Do/Does" or "Are/Is" for asking a question. |
Nevermind's accent makes him almost impossible to understand, so I thought I'd give you an answer also.
The present continuous tense (also called the present progressive tense) indicates that something is happening right now, or at least nowadays. So, "Are you providing food to him?" is asking whether you are giving him food right now or these days.
The simple present tense often indicates something that usually or habitually happens, so, "Do you provide food to him?" is asking whether it's someone's habit or routine to give him food.
The difference between these two questions is the difference between the present simple and the present continuous tenses. Study those, and you'll understand better. |

Mr. Jamie was right. So, the two sentences you gave were grammatically right. Using what just depends on your purpose. Do you understand my English? _________________ Nothing's impossible! Never say never! They're what I've been following. Hope you to follow them too! |

Hi Nevermind,Vietanhpham_Winter and Jamie (K),thank for your explanation. It really helps me a lot.
I have another question here, how about this one: "Do you understand my question?" and "Are you understanding my question?"
I knew the correct answer should be "Do you understand my question?" but i just wondered why we can't use "Are you understanding my question?" |

| "Understand" is a non-action verb (also called a stative verb), and those can generally not be used in a continuous tense. |

That's not very nice. I had no problem understanding him.

Sorry. I deal with foreign accents all day every day, and I could not understand him.

Sure, but when the accent is unintelligible to someone who can understand even very difficult accents, or when it requires so much work to understand that the listener gives up quickly, then the person has some work to do on his speech. |

Our great Jamie (K) is always worrying about the people with bad accents...he should have to listen to the English spoken by the African Natives who share the Zulu as their mother tongue...
