Hello everyone, I just signed in so I don't really know who I am talking to or what the appropriate way to do so may be. I'd like to say though that I'm very pleased to have finally found a reliable on-line English-grammar source.
Here's my question.
Given the sentence, "He told me he will go to Rome in his next vacation." Is the use of 'will' correct here considering that 'his next vacation' is still a time in the future at the time of reporting, or should we substitute it for 'would' as prescriptive grammars tend to say?
Thanks in advance.

I would use "would" and not "will" in this sentence, as it is the "correct" grammatical form to use. That being said, I'm sure you'll hear people using them both in day to day conversation. Certainly if you were going to be writing, or answering a grammatical question on a test, you should use "would" for reported future speech.
