‘No love lost between someone and someone else’.
It seems to me, the meaning of the idiom is counterintuitive.
The literal meaning (They still love each other very much) of the idiom is almost contrary to its real meaning(They don’t like each other).
Can someone throw some light on the etymology of the phrase?

What? The idiom has such meaning? I think it just means they still love each other.

This is incorrect.

No. But, shouldn't it be the meaning of that idiom?

My best guess is that it came about as an ironic phrase. It could also have something to do with there not being and love between them to lose when they fight, but I think the first one is more likely.

Perhaps it can be explained like this:

There is only a certain amount of love in the world. The two people in question do not like each other. Therefore, none of the love that exists in the world is wasted on them.
