Question word order and adverbials #1 (permalink) Wed Mar 17, 2010 0:11 am   Question word order and adverbials

Hello all,
I would much appreciate your help with a grammar rule - here's the problem:
my class of pre-intermediate students all got the word order wrong in this sentence- "When was the last time you ate out?" which became "When was you the last time ate out?", probably reasoning that the correct word order is (question word) + auxiliary+subject+...
Would the correct explanation be that last, as an adverbial, comes after was, but before the subject?

thank you!

"Last" is not an adverbial here. It's an adjective describing "time". The subject of the main clause is "the last time".

[The last time] [was] when?
When [was] [the last time]?

From there you can add the embedded clause "you ate out".

[The last time [you ate out]] [was] when?
When [was] [the last time [you ate out]]?

However we usually use when was the last time you ate out rather than the last time you ate out was when. And I wonder why we don't use present perfect but past perfect in YOU ATE OUT as we usually use it after THE FIRST, THE LAST structures. For example, this is the first/last time I've visited him.

Thank you, I see my mistake!
The reason it's in Past Simple is that the class hasn't yet learned the Perfect forms...

If you study English to a theoretical level, you will learn that ordinary questions are formed from so-called "echo" questions. Therefore the use of "The last time you ate out was when?" is a valid way of explaining the syntax of the normal question.

Tamara, you didn't make a mistake. Vietanhpham is a Vietnamese speaker of English, and he very often dispenses bad advice, so be careful when he offers it.

The past simple can be used in those sentences, depending on the context. It's not wrong.

To Jamie: I meant the mistake about last being an adverbial.
And thanks for the advice ;-)

I just wondered, not advised or recommended. But do you agree that This is the first time I have visited you is a correct sentence?

I can't understand your question. Please punctuate it properly and try again.

Yes we may be all right but let's wait for Mr. Jamie's reply. He's really a strict and serious helper.
