write to you o write for you #1 (permalink) Sun Mar 28, 2010 13:40 pm   write to you o write for you

Hello everybody, please someone could me explain a doubt?
I have learnt at school that with the verb "write" the appropriate preposition it is "to", but I read in a text "write for you". It will be possible say "write you" too?
Another doubt that I couldn't find the explanation in the dictionary it is the meaning of "Pick the brain of sb".

Thanks a lot

Write to me is often used in British English and write me is just used in American English.

I`d like to know too if both expressions are correct: write to you or write for you. Help me.

I think write for you is always unacceptable.

Hi Sandra,
(my fellow Brazilian =o] )

As I perceive it:
"Write me something" = "Write something to me"
  • Write something addressed to me, one that comes to my location.

"Write something for me" = Write something because of me
  • for my benefit, as a favor ("Write your name here for me, please")
  • instead of me/ in my place: ("My wrist is sore, could you write/type this text for me?")
  • inspired/motivated by me ("Write a poem for art, for love.. ...for me!")

Criticism and more input are welcome.

To you readers, for you Sandra: Cheers!
Planta.

write to you o write for you #8 (permalink) Tue Mar 30, 2010 3:44 am   write to you o write for you

Hi everybody, I could find something about the verb "to write" and the preposition that follow it:
- write something to somebody; write somebody (something) - to write and send a letter, etc to somebody. For example: I have written a letter to my son or
I have written my son a letter or
I have written to him.
- In US English we can say: I have written him.
I could not find anything about "write for you".

Hope this explanations can help.

Hi Planta!

Thank you very much. As I said, I could not find anything about the preposition "for" with the verb "to write".
I am from São Paulo too.
A hug
