Usage of prepositions with reference to the job #1 (permalink) Mon Mar 29, 2010 18:41 pm   Usage of prepositions with reference to the job

What is the most appropriate preposition to be used when referring to the profession
Ex:
My brother works for a company.
My sister works in a company.
My brother works with a company that mints black money.
My sister works at a factory.
I'm a representative for a company

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

The prepositions in your examples - in, for, at all refer to location. The use of 'for' and 'with' are more concerned with the sort of employment.

Your question is very interesting. I would like to know too. I would write ¨My sister works in a company¨.

For and with #5 (permalink) Mon Mar 29, 2010 19:12 pm   For and with

So is it that we have to use for or with when referring to employment.
I work for /with a company?

Yes, when you refer to the type of employment/employer rather than where someone actually works.

Mr. Alan,
My sister works at a factory.
My sister works in a factory.
Are both OK?
Please confirm,

Hi,

'At a factory' suggests the type /nature of the job/work. 'In a factory' tells you the exact place where she works.
