Syntax question (regarding the use of "of/for which") #1 (permalink) Fri Apr 02, 2010 16:25 pm   Syntax question (regarding the use of "of/for which")

Hello,

I'd be grateful if someone could tell me which of the below phrases is correct:

The track originally appeared on her 1985 LP (of which the CD is a reissue).
The track originally appeared on her 1985 LP (which the CD is a reissue of).

I've got 1 Google match for the former, none for the latter (which I have a turn for, although it might very well be a false intuition).

In theory, they're correct but the latter is less used.

Hi,
The first one is correct.
But the second one must be written in this way:
The track originally appeared on her 1985 LP THAT the CD is a reissue OF.

I don't think so Morteza. Can you tell me where you find it?

This formulation seems similar to that from "the book that the movie is based on", so I guess it's correct.
Thanks a lot.

Hello Baubau

As Morteza pointed out, the word 'that' would generally be used instead of 'which' in the second sentence. I'm reluctant to call your second sentence incorrect, however. If you added a comma after the word 'LP', then I would be perfectly happy with the wording in your second sentence (because it would then be clear that the word 'which' introduces a non-defining clause).

Otherwise, the most significant difference between your two sentences is register: The word order in your first sentence comes across as being more formal than the word order in your second sentence does.

I disagree with Wanderer that the word order in your second sentence would be less commonly used. In fact, because the register is less formal, I would expect that sort of word order (i.e. ending the sentence with a preposition) to be more common.
