I've run into this phrase in a book, and I find it quite awkward.
Hope that you guy can help me to understand it.
"To seek elective office".

There's nothing awkward here as well as nothing to explain. Just use your dictionary and find out what elective office means.

It's not awkward. It means to try to get elected to a government position.
