| I read something like “What number president is he?” which accordingly is about the most natural way of asking the question to get the answer “He is the (first, second, 100th) president.” I wish to confirm if this indeed is one of the natural ways native speakers make questions on ordinals. |
I can't think of a better way of asking a question to get that answer, though it feels a little unnatural. Personally, I would probably ask "How many presidents were there before him?" and add one.

and if the situation is more specific or complicated? How do we ask the question, for example, to get the following answers?
1. He is the 6th chairman of the board;
|
"What number chairman is he?" (or, as above, "How many chairmen were there before him?)
| Quote: |
2. He is 9th placed in the first Philippine bar exams;
|
"Where (that is, 'what position') did he come in the group who took the Philippine bar exams?"
| Quote: |
3. This is the hundredth time this question was asked;
|
How many times has this question been asked? (and the answer should be "This is the hundredth time this question has been asked.")
| Quote: |
4: This is the 50th among 100 questions posted so far;
|
This really needs two separate parts to get the complete answer - "which question is this?" and "how many questions have been posted?"... "What number question is this out of how many?" would get the answer, but again this feels like an unnatural way of asking.

5. He is the 2nd born in the family.
|
"What number (child) is he in the family?"
I think the real problem with the unnatural feel of some of these questions is that you would not usually ask questions to deliberately try to get an ordinal number in the response. _________________ Cheers m' dears! |
