No, both are correct.
You couldn't say, "Does it worth it?", or, "Is it matter?"
Both would be grammatically incorrect. _________________ Keep it simple ... Keep it interesting. |

| Thanks for taking the time and looking into my question but what you said didn't answer the question "why". |

Sometimes there is no easy answer ash. 'is' derives from the verb 'to be' whilst 'does' derives from the verb 'to do'.
They are simply the incorrect words. _________________ Cheers m' dears! |

Hi, I think the answer is this: We use 'is' in connection with an adjective and 'does' in connection with a verb. ('Worth' is an adjective and 'matter' is a verb.)

Hi Ash,
I'm interested in your question:

Hi, just a quick question; why do we say "is it worth it?" but we also say "does it matter?" Is there a discrepancy here in the usage of Is and Does? |
You have had your question answered. Now, I have a question for you -Where do you see the/a discrepancy?

OK let me give a little bit of background here, even though English is not my mother tongue I have been living in an English speaking society for 10 years and for 10 years before that I used English for a big part of my daily life so suffice to say I speak English fluently but I got now to the point where I don't think about it I just know it almost as native English speakers but! my brother joined me here a few years ago and his English is fine but his grammar still needs some work and when I correct him I need to convince him and not just say "that's the way it is" and lately he has been saying "does it worth it" and insists that I convince him why it is wrong.
Beesnees answer is the one I came up with but I just wanted more solid answer for him.
I already advised him to join this site which allows him to get English courses while keeping his day job.
Thanks for all your help.

Alan! I haven't thought about that "the/a" discrepancy before; I’ll keep my eyes open for that :-) |
