Better use the approach children follow: start by listening. You might want to read books, but it's WAY better if you read it while listening to a native speaker reading the book.

English is not a phonetic language, and most people end up having terrible pronunciation skills, which lead them to hardly understand what native speakers say.

As for me, I study english by watching movie with english subtitles. I then jot down the new words/expressions I come along.

I then again watch the movie (this time without subtitle) and try to understand what the characters are saying.
