Hi,

I need your help, amigos.

Does "at bay" means "at a distance" in the sentence.

BEYOND THE ALPS IS LAKE CHEIMSEE, WHICH, PROTECTED BY A MILDER MICRO-CLIMATE, USUALLY HOLDS THE SEVERITY OF WINTER AT BAY.

Thank you for your attention paid.

"At bay" seems to me originated from the meaning of keeping someone (unwelcome) from landing on land.
