Good evening everybody,
I saw this phrase on the internet.
There is only you and me. Why it is not there are only you and me?
Thank you very much.

Hi Yemel,

'There is only you and me' suggests that this is a combination or a unit rather than two people Let me show two conversations to show the difference:

A Is there anybody else in the house apart from me and you?

B No, there's only you and me.

A How many people agree to the new proposal?

B There are only you and me who are opposed to the proposal.

Hope this clarifies this apparent anomaly for you.

Alan

Hi,

Technically it should be 'you and I' but in conversation 'you and me' is usual.
