Hi,

I ran into these sentences as follows:

1. With my father he is patient.
2. *With my father my mother is patient.

The book says #2 is incorrect. Could you tell me why? I really have no idea. And

3. With my father he takes a walk after breakfast.
4. *With my father he took a walk this morning.

Why #4 is incorrect?

Thank you!

Hi Haihao,

Your sentence:

Quote:
2 With my father my mother is patient

I think this is a case of ambiguity or confusion. I would suggest a comma after 'father'.

Quote:
4 With my father he took a walk this morning

I wouldn't say this was incorrect as such any more than (3) is 'incorrect'. I can only say that (3) is more acceptable as it talks of a regular occurrence but in (4) there is reference to one occasion and the word order is awkward as it would sound better with 'With my father' at the end of the sentence.
