meaning of statement after , ,if' #1 (permalink) Sat Apr 24, 2010 12:35 pm   meaning of statement after , ,if'

I signed the letter. Later my friend says about me, with the statement:
1.If you signed this letter, you made a mistake. - is it ok?, because I don't mean the conditional 2, but the statement: if you signed this letter.

An example of using conditional 2 is for example:
2.If you signed this letter, you would make a mistake.

Can: ,,If you signed this letter'' have conditional meaning as in sentence 2. and the meaning of statement as in sentence 1.?

Next example:
I stopped doing this and I did wrong. Later another person says about me with the statement:
3.You did wrong if you stopped doing that. - is it ok?

Thanks.

Example 1: "If you signed this letter, you made a mistake."
That means: If you have already signed the letter, (the speaker thinks) it was a mistake for you to have done so.

Example 2: "If you signed this letter, you would make a mistake."
That means: If you were going to sign this letter (now or later) (the speaker thinks) it would be a mistake for you to do so.

Example 3: "You did wrong if you stopped doing that."
That means: If you have already stopped doing something (the speaker thinks) you should have continued doing it.

All the examples are correctly written, but they mean slightly different things.

Beeesneees is a native speaker English teacher. At any rate, if I received such a detailed and laboured explanation from anybody, I would thank the anybody first instead of inquiring for confirmers.

Thank you Haihao, you are very gracious, as always. However, I didn't mind Saneta seeking additional confirmation. After all, unless she's been following a lot of the threads, she had no way of knowing how accurate my information was likely to be.

Dear Haihao,
You are not very perceptive. I wrote ,,Thanks'' in my first message and it concerns thanking for the answers from anybody.
Of course I'm grateful to BEEESNEEES. Yes, I request for the opinion from anybody or all from the team of english-test.net and I don't hide it.
Regards,
Saneta
