Is "pantingly" a right word to use? #1 (permalink) Thu Apr 29, 2010 2:09 am   Is "pantingly" a right word to use?

Hi:

My daughter wrote an article using "pantingly" as an adverb but was highlighted by "WORD" spelling check. I can find it on some dictionary (like Dictionary.com) but some not. Kind of confusing to me.

Hi Morteza:

Here is the original sentence, let me rewrite with your sugggestion:

"“What was that?” asked Scratchy pantingly." ---> "“What was that?” asked Scratchy in panting."

Any other suggestions?

Thanks.

Hi,
Maybe yes!
pant for something phrasal verb
to want something very much:
He came in panting for a cup of tea.
Maybe your daughter should use "patiently" .
Hope this helps,
Morteza

Morteza,

I think she wants to express Scratchy is asking with "hard and quick breath". I'm not sure if "patiently" can fit in.

Hi Markland, you wouldn't use 'in panting.' or 'pantingly' in her sentence. She should say:

"What was that?" asked Scratchy, panting.
or
"What was that?" panted Scratchy.
