"whereas" (while)
You use 'whereas' to introduce a comment which contrasts with what is said in the main clause.
"Pensions are linked to inflation, whereas they should be linked to the cost of living." _________________ Cheers m' dears! |

Hi guys, I think that whereas is used to introduce result as the exemple : "My classmate's so ill whereas she can't come during a month." |

Hi Abir,
I'm afraid this doesn't work:
| Quote: |
| My classmate's so ill whereas she can't come during a month. |
'Whereas' has to introduce some kind of contrast/comparison as in: Here we do this, whereas there they do that.
In your sentence the classmate can't come because she's ill. In that case her absence is a result/consequence of her illness and you would have to say:
My classmate's so ill THAT she can't come FOR a month = As a result/consequence of her illness, she can't come.

| Do you think whereas is a word with meaning of the mixture of where and as? And do it have the same usage as while? |

| In reality i don't think that whereas is in all situations used in the same meaning , In my opinion it depends on the context. |

1. It being the fact that; inasmuch as. 2. While (at the same time.) 3. While (on the contrary.) 4. An introductory statement to a formal document; a preamble. 5. A conditional statement.
'Some married couples argue all time, whereas others never do.' 'We would always choose somewhere in the mountains for a holiday, whereas our children always want the seaside.' 'In the UK the hottest month of the year is usually July, whereas in southern Europe the hottest period is usually in August.' 'Britain secured only one gold medal in Atlanta four years ago, whereas at Sydney 2000 we ended up with eleven.' 'Whereas the Law states...' _________________ Cheers m' dears! |
