Rather than regret the things I haven't done? #1 (permalink) Sat May 01, 2010 1:14 am   Rather than regret the things I haven't done?

This is a quote that I love from Lucille Ball, but I am not sure if it is grammatically correct.

These are the three ways I thought it could be...

"I'd rather regret the things I've done than regret the things I haven't done."

"I’d rather regret the things I’ve done than the things I haven’t."

"I would rather regret the things I have done than regret the things I haven’t done."

Which one is best?

All three are grammatically correct and perfectly acceptable. Take your pick!

The first and third are better as a 'play on words' than the second, simply because the final 'done' completes the cycle.

The first is snappier, the third is less formal.

Also if you liked that quote, try this one:
I never wish I was not what I was not when I didn't wish what I was not was not what I am not.
