<This portion edited (removed) following Alan's correction>

The sentence would have to change to something like this to enable the past tense to be used throughout:
"Whilst she was there Mrs Crale went to the refrigerator and got the iced beer out..."

Is that any clearer? Someone else may be able to explain it better.

Hi Maxim,

I have to disagree.

'Go' and 'get' are infinitives and depend on the verb 'saw'. The construction is: verb (saw) + (object) + infinitive (go get). Look at these: I heard her come into the room I felt the rain drop onto my head They let the children play in the garden.

I just LOVE that picture BN. Surely a lady of your obvious abilities could have obtained something to your advantage nicer than that one.

<grin> This is to my advantage, Kitosdad. No one can tell where the real me ends and the special effects begin, so they don't know how weird looking I am!

Hello again!
Yes, I have understood my mistake now. Becuase the "to" is usually skipped in infinitive case. In addition in that sentence it should be "goes and gets" in the case of mistake(as I thought before Present Simple was used there). Thanks.

Hi Maxim,

I hope you understood my explanation. From what you say:

I am not so sure you have understood.

Agatha Christie. 5 little pigs- question #9 (permalink) Sat May 01, 2010 12:39 pm   Agatha Christie. 5 little pigs- question

Hi Alan,

I got a little surprised at the above "have to change" this time merely for the grammar. I would think "She saw Mrs Crale go to the refrigerator and get the iced beer out" goes as fine as Mrs Crale, and your construction: verb (saw) + (object) + infinitive (go get) seems to me universally fine, too, as with the verbs other than "see": make, let, have, (watch?), etc., grammatically. Am I in the wrong?

Thank you!

Alan, I meant that I thought it was mistake in the sentence. Mistake in a usage of tense, it had seemed at first it was present simple(before you explained it). But nevertheless even if it was present simple it should have been verbs "goes and gets" there. But it is go and get(infinitives). I should have noticed that there were no endings and therefore it is not present simple as it seemed. Thank you.

Sorry for the disturbance. I'm wondering if there're -ing and -ed structures with such verbs as see, watch, notice,...

Hi Maxim,

I follow what you have said.

Hi Haihao,

Yes, you are right. I think it's a case of 'too many cooks'!

Haihao: Are you going to start attacking my posts again for absolutely no reason other than your sense of absolute, unquestioning respect?
If so, then I suggest you read what I post far more carefully, so that you do not end up making a fool of yourself.
I did not suggest that the sentence should be changed! I explained how it would need to be changed in order for the original posters tenses to work!
