Dear respected teachers,

I've heard and seen the text of fire announcement of a building that says as below:

Ladies and gentlemen, your attention, please.
The fire alarm has been activated in the building.
We are investigating the situation.
Please remain calm and standby you speakers for further instruction.
Thank you

My question is around the verb standby there. Is there any thing wrong with the use of the verb? It is used as "standby you speakers"? Please advise how it is used in this situation.

Many thanks

Hi,

This would usually be written as two separate words: 'stand' and 'by'. It means in your sentence: stay near. It has another meaning and that is 'support' in the sense of being loyal to someone.

Thanks Alan, but I wonder why there are two objects there "you speakers". What do they mean? Is there anything wrong with the grammar, please?

Thanks,

Hi,

Yes, that should be 'your' speakers.
