Our route (goes, lasts, continues) along the road that leads to the palace complex and the dam built instead of a wooden one in the XVIII century. The dam regulates the water level in ponds and divides the Middle and the Upper Tsaritsyno ponds. On the right, (you can see) the scenic beauty of the Upper pond. In its center there is a round island with its bushy clumps of trees. From this bank of the pond one can observe splendid view on the imperial residence. Tsaritsyno history is old and rich; however, the heyday of ancient estate is dated back to 1775, when Russian Empress Catherine II while travelling had visited its picturesque surroundings. The famous (prominent) traveler was conquered by the beauty of this place, so she decided to buy it for herself. The empress ordered to build here, on the high bank above the ponds, new summer residence. The architects Vasiliy Bazhenov and Mathew Kazakov (had being) were in charge of construction here for twenty years. During this time palaces and bridges, galleries and pavilions were erected. The imperial estate was planned and decorated in an exotic medieval style - Gothic, which was in vogue in the art of the XVIII century. Above the tops of ancient (they are several centuries old) trees one can see tent-roofs of the Big Palace, through the green foliage red brick walls of pavilions, decorated with white stone are in sight. Nowadays, the picturesque surroundings of the estate, which were called by Catherine the Tsaritsyno Selo (Tsars’ village), and the complex of residence, attract tourists from all over the world. In front of us is one of the most spectacular constructions of the estate – the Figured bridge, with an arc and road beneath it, leading to the center part of the residence. The Figured Bridge is the main entrance of the estate. It looks as a fortress’s gate on the boundaries of a medieval town or knight's castle. The elaborate decor of the construction became the reason of its name ‘Figured bridge”.
