Dear Teacher,

Could you help me with explaining the phrasal verb "rattled past" as the following sentence:

I usually woke up early because the noise of the traffic as it rattled past my bedroom window was very loud first thing in the morning.

Thanks

'Rattle past' is not a phrasal verb; 'past' is merely a preposition not tied to the verb 'rattle'. 'Rattle' here simply means make a rattle-like noise-- a sort of clanking, etc. Here is the dictionary definition of 'rattle':

1.
to give out or cause a rapid succession of short, sharp sounds, as in consequence of agitation and repeated concussions: The windows rattled in their frames.
2.
to move or go, esp. rapidly, with such sounds: The car rattled along the highway.
