Modal verb: would #2 (permalink) Thu Dec 08, 2005 9:05 am   Modal verb: would

.
We do not use would in this structure (with I as the subject) as a polite request, although could is common:

Could I ride with you?

If the subject is not I, then would is possible:

Would you let me ride with you?
Would it be possible for me to ride with you?

.

'can' is used like " I can walk to the park. " to express what a you are capable of doing.

'will' is used like " I will walk to the park. " to express what you are going to do.

'could' is used like " I could walk to the park last year. " to express what you were (in the past) capable of doing.

'could' is also used like " I could walk to the park. " to also express what you are capable of doing. However, it is more subjective. It is like the speaker believes it is true, but maybe something is missing. " I could walk to the park, if I knew how to get there. " Or maybe the speaker is choosing what to do and expressing their choices like " I could walk to the park or I could stay home. I do not know what I want to do. "

'could' is also used to make a question more polite like " Could I come to the party? "

'would' is used like " I would walk to the park every day last summer. " to express what you did (in the past).

'would' is also used like " I would walk to the park. " to express what you want to do, but it is more subjective. Maybe you cannot because of something like " I would walk to the park, but I have to work today. " Or maybe you only want to do it if some other thing is true like " I would walk to the park if you came with me. "

'would' is also used to make a question more polite like " Would you come to my party? "
