Could you explain to me the following sentences please,

They got married exactly 20 years a go

or

The married exactly 20 years a go

???

Hi CDT,

I presume that's a typo at the start of the 2nd sentence?

It's not "a go" (2 words), but "ago" (1 word). You use "ago" when you are referring to past time. For example, if something happened one year ago, it is one year since it happened. If it happened a long time ago, it is a long time since it happened. Their marriage happened 20 years ago.

There is no difference between the meaning:
"They got married exactly 20 years ago."
"They married exactly 20 years ago."
