'hadn't' would be best as you have now seen him (on Friday)

Compare with:
I'm meeting my friend next Friday. I haven't seen him since 2004.

I didn't refer to any texts or notes, but I've just turned up these references with a quick online search:

http://www.edufind.com/english/grammar/Tenses7.cfm See Note 1 at the bottom of the page.

http://www.myenglishteacher.net/past_perfect_progressive.htmlScroll down to where it says, "When the past perfect progressive answers a how-long question, it often uses the words for and since."

http://netgrammar.altec.org/Units/Unit_14/a101c14_201000.htmlLook at the examples of past perfect usage here.
