You use imminent when you are talking about something that is likely to happen in (near) future.

1) His resignation became imminent because of the bad performance of the company in the last quarter.
2) Looking at the way trees are being cut down these days, a steady rise in temperatures looks imminent.

Only don't confuse "imminent" with "eminent", like one US Supreme Court Judge of Hispanic descent did.
I think she said "imminent domain" when she meant "eminent domain".
That was very ignorant of her and it made the headlines of some US rags. Hehe.
