Right. I saw the problem but I was not sure if it was right to say "apples are a popular fruit".

Haihao,

I would happily use any of them except for number 4. Which I chose of numbers 1 to 3 would depend on the wider context and personal preference at that moment.

I would definitely use the article 'a'.

You led me out of a chaos again, Bez.:-) Especially the comment "Which I chose of numbers 1 to 3 would depend on the wider context and personal preference at that moment." is by a shepherd of mine. :)

Thank you so very much!

If you want to say it that way then you have to put it like this:

Apples are a popular fruit. Most of them are no bigger than 10 cm in diameter.

By the way, "Apple is a popular fruit. Most apples are no bigger than 10 cm in diameter." is not good either.

The first sentence should be:

- "An apple is a popular fruit," or
- "The apple is a popular fruit."
