I saw in a book saying,"........the piccaso exhibit."Isn't THE unneccesary?

A full sentence would be helpful. I suspect it is needed, however. I cannot imagine how it wouldn't be in that position.

It depends on what else the book said about it, but it is probably needed because it was a particular Picasso exhibition that they were talking about.
