English Grammar Tests, Elementary Level
ESL/EFL Test #256 "Dialogue Comprehension (5)", answer 9
Do you have an aspirin? Yes, I have a bottle over here.
Correct answer: (b) Yes, I have a bottle over here.
Your answer was: incorrect Do you have an aspirin? No, I ate them all. _________________________
Hello,
Do you know why my answer was wrong? To me, I think Answer (b) means I have got a bottle instead of an aspirin.
Thank you.

Hello Bhikku,
Although they are taken by mouth, we don't speak about 'eating' aspirin (or any other form of medicine). That answer would be, "No, I took them all." (Presumably not all at once!!!)
The doctor told me, "Take two aspirin and call me in the morning."
Answer (b) indicates that you have a bottle of aspirin. It would be assumed that the bottle contained aspirin as that is what the first person asked for. "Do you have any playing cards?" "Yes, there's a pack on the shelf." _________________ Cheers m' dears! |

Where I live aspirin comes in pills and it is a solid substance. In the UK it comes in bottles then and it is a liquid? _________________ If it's not easy, don't do it!

No, aspirin comes in pill form, Tort... and these days the pills are usually supplied either in plastic containers or in blister packs inside boxes... but occasionally they are still supplied in bottles, as they always used to be when I was younger.

Hello Beeesneees,
Many thanks for pointing out to me the distinction between “taking medicines” and “eating medicines”.
