Could you explain the difference between 'raise' and 'rise' (salary, price...)?

Hi Marianna,

One verb (RISE) is intransitive = no object as in
The tax on petrol has risen (rise/rose/risen) no object

One verb (RAISE) is transitive = + object as in:
The Government has raised (RAISE/RAISED)the tax on petrol.+ object

rise

this verb means to get up, move up ,under one's own power(without help of others) increase.
notice that there is no complement

examples:
*the sun rises early in the summer
* when the bell rings the students rises from their seats.
* when oil and water mix, oil rises to the top

raise

this verb means to lift or elevate an object or to increase something

examples:

* the students raise their hands
*the weightfilter raises the barbells over his head
* after studying very hard, jihn raised his grades substantially.
