The best class I had in school was the class of complimentary and alternative medicine (CAM).
The class has broadened my scope in seeing patient. Firstly, it has opened my mind that there are other alternatives, which are not base on evidence, which unexplainable by scientific method especially for chronically ill patient where there is no improvement or no solution with the conventional medicine/western medicine to the best interest of the patient. For example in chronic low back pain. If in the conventional medicine, there was no significant healing, and the patient dead duck by surgery, why did not we try a chiropractic that might be helpful, safer, less invasive and less expensive.
Secondly, the class has advanced my understanding and attitudes toward CAM. People usually think that the CAM is safe due to its natural herbs or its way, while in fact it is not always true. I should know how to ask the patient about possibility of using CAM by questioning, such as are you taking supplements or vitamins? Are you using herbs? This is in order to think about the potential interactions such as between herbs and herbs, herbs and medicine and the adverse reactions of the herbs, vitamins, or other supplements. Otherwise, this valuable information cannot be gathered. If the doctor does not ask, the patient will not tell for many reasons, such as it is irrelevant, not important, incompatible with his wish, afraid of blamed for, or even denied.
Thirdly, the class has enlarged my understanding about CAM that in general, the healers spend more time and listen more to the patients rather than the doctors do. This personal attention gives the patients more satisfaction. Besides that, the healers empower the patients to improve themselves, instead of placing patients as subjects of experience. _________________ I am looking for a skype partner to practice my English. |
