Hi Suku,
What you need to say is:
If I were a rich person, I would spend a lot of money on charity (I would give a lot of money to charity).
If I had been a rich person, I would have given a lot of money to charity.

It's sentence.
If I were a rich person, I would spend a lot of money on charity. If I had been a rich person, I would have spent a lot of money on charity.
Keep "would" out of if clauses, and you won't go wrong.
You have not used "had" here, so I can only assume that you are referring to the past perfect. The past perfect is used to refer to inactive past events that we do not perceive as especially relevant to the present. It is especially likely when we are referring in accounts to events that happened until a specific point.
I had seen the movie three times before he decided to go see it with me. I had been a fan of hers for a long time, but after she mistreated her fans, I moved on. She didn't like him from the start. Honestly, I had enjoyed his company. But then he started making obscene jokes. I asked him to leave.
"Would have" is the conditional perfect. We use this to refer to things we speculate would have taken place in the past if certain things were true. That thing may only be implied, though.
If he had lied to me, I would have confronted him. I would have laughed if he had said that to me. I would have bought a mansion if I had won the lottery.
Person A:I think I hurt my friend's feelings, but I tried to pretend everything was all right. Maybe I didn't handle it right. Person B: I would have apologized (if in that situation).
In the last example, the condition is implied. |
