Hi,

Do you find the following sentence grammatically correct (in both British and American English):

"Do not listen to someone tell you how to be successful when they are not"

Thank you very much.

Not quite. I'd use 'telling'.

I would also end the sentence with a period (full stop) or exclamation mark.

Thank you very much, Mister Micawber and Torsten. However I'm not completely clear about that. I think basically both "tell" and "telling" can be used in this case, but I prefer "tell" because "telling" tends to emphasise the continuous sense.

What do you think?

I think not. 'Listen' is a continuous activity-- that is its point.

What about other similar verbs such as "hear", "see", "watch",... (I mean perception verbs)

IMO, PV + O + V & PV + O + V-ing are both possible. In your example, "someone tell you how to be successful" suggests a duration of time: it's like a seminar, isn't it? So, "telling" is more natural to me. If you want to emphasize you want to shut up your ears and do not listen to such successful talking even a second, then "tell" is OK.
