Do luxuries prevent our becoming strong and independent? #1 (permalink) Wed Jun 16, 2010 22:23 pm   Do luxuries prevent our becoming strong and independent?

Luxuries, as defined by an aphorism are, "things, that a man aspires to buy, but cannot be bought easily". The above stated aphorism means that, luxuries are the items that a person wishes to buy. Since, they require a lot of money to be bought, hence are somewhat difficult to buy.

Luxuries make a person’s life easy, yet fashionable. Luxuries are the objects, which a person can use, to demonstrate his social status and achievements. Automobiles for example, bolster the above stated fact, for they betoken a person's economic richness and achievements. Automobiles today have become an integral part of life, as they are most often used, to travel long distances with ease and comfort. Additionally, as one may ascertain, a person owning a Ferrari sports car enjoys a higher status, than a person owning a Ford sedan, and thus, an automobile becomes a symbol of status and dignity.

While on the other hand, luxuries make a person dependent. Moreover, they render a person arrogant and haughty, as a person starts boasting of what he possesses. Additionally, luxuries have become a part of one's glitz and pride. Citing the above example again, an automobile may be used to cart children to school, or it may be used to fetch groceries from the market, while the same tasks can be easily accomplished, by the use of public transport. Likewise, if a person is getting late for the office, he would always prefer to travel by his own car which would help him to reach on time. But in most of the cases, even when he is not late for the office, he would still prefer traveling by his car, but the purpose served this time would be "show off" of his superficial glamour. Thus one can infer, that a person becomes totally dependent on the luxuries. Also, the reason why people become reluctant to walk, may be again attributed to the above stated example.

In spite of the above stated facts, luxuries hold different meaning for different people, as for some a luxury may be a necessity, while for others it may be a comfort. For instance, the President of a country cannot use public transport for traveling, because of his security problems, thus automobile becomes his necessity. On the contrary, a common man has no such security problems, and can travel by public transport, thus automobile becomes a comfort for him. In addition to this, time also changes the value of a luxury, from comfort to necessity. E.g. mobile phones were introduced in the early 1970's, and at that time, a few dozen of people could afford to buy it, thus it was an item of luxury at that time. But today, every person possesses at least one mobile phone, and thus it can be inferred, that the value of luxury has degraded to a necessity with time.

Hence, in conclusion, the luxuries are the items which hold different value for different people. Admitting, that the task of abandoning the luxuries is almost impossible in today's scenario, but their excessive use has to be refrained, for their excessive usage can render a person useless.
