Charles Ives who was the first great American composer of the twenty century had to wait for many years to get public recognition for his work. Charles Ives was son of a band master. In his childhood, he used to played drums in his father’s band and organ in his local church. Although, he had graduated at Yale University as a musician, he did not choose music as his career. His composition did not follow the musical fashion at that time. Therefore, he suspected that his compositions would not have a good acceptance for the public. While people wrote lyrical songs, Charles Ives transfigured music and musical form. For example: He combined indiscriminate and distorted family hymns, marches and battle songs. He was trying to convince musicians to play his compositions. However, they rejected his compositions saying that it was unplayable. So, Charles Ives turned to business which he become a successful insurance executive. After has recovered from a heart attack, he convinced himself that his ideas would be difficult to be accepted. Therefore, he published his work privately and he was offering his compositions for free. In 1939, John Kirkpatrick played “Concord Sonata” in a famous concert hall. Afterwards, Charles Ives, had excellent reviews for it and his composition was proclaimed “ Greatest music composed by an American” . By 1947, Charles Ives was famous and his second symphony which was played at New York Philharmonic received the Pulitzer Prize.
