College is a place where a student begins his new life after schooling. He starts taking things more practically, and thus enhances his aptitude. College faculty primarily focuses on training a student from the future perspective, and it emphasize on making the students, adept and adroit over the subjects through constant learning, for they can face the real world problems easily.
Additionally, many colleges claim that, they furnish highly qualified engineers and doctors, which can be imputed to the rigorous training provided to students for a period of 4-5 years. In addition to this, certain colleges claim a 100% placement of students in reputed firms, which can be attributed to constant learning and rigorous training.
The actual facts however, differ from the projected ones. The rigorous training of the colleges today has been limited to cramming of subjects, rather than practical applications. College faculties seldom work outside the academic world, hence fail to impart the required practical knowledge. Colleges focus on theoretical knowledge, rather than practical applications, and one can easily ascertain, that colleges today are just preparing an appreciable quantity of engineers and doctors, rather than "quality engineers and doctors". Additionally, colleges are imparting an "assumed" knowledge to the students, which forces them to cram the subjects. The reason behind calling such knowledge "assumed" is, that college faculty rather than demonstrating working models for a concerned topic, ask students to assume the things and move on. This concept of "assumed" knowledge, might work in a few subjects like, philosophy or wave theory, but not in subjects like analog electronics or civil surveying. Thus, one can infer from the above stated facts that, colleges today are preparing "fake" engineers and doctors, who do not possess the required knowledge of real world situations and circumstances. Since, the college faculty has failed to work outside the academic world hence, students have started adopting private learning and correspondence courses, so as to face the required exposure. Also, since colleges do not facilitate practical learning of a subject, therefore students resort to training in big firms and industries, at their own stake.
This arises the need of working outside the academic world, especially in colleges. Practical knowledge must be imparted to the students at college level, so that they become well familiarized with the real world problems. Practical learning of a subject should be exhorted, as it becomes easier for a person to remember things, which occur in front of him, rather than the things, he has just read about in the books. Practical knowledge is necessary for any field or subject, whether it be business studies, medical science, or engineering. For instance, if a student of mechanical engineering visualizes the working of machines and devices, he can master over his subjects such as, theory of machines and machine drawing. If an economics student is well familiarized with current stock market exchange rates, growth rate, inflation etc., he can easily augment the latest facts to his thesis. Also, a student of medical science, who observes dissections visually, can easily learn the subject of "Anatomy". Hence, one can infer that, if a student visually observes things taught to him in the lectures, he certainly remembers more, which further help him to hone his skills over the subject. Also, he gets well familiarized with the latest changes in the related field of a subject, and hence can tackle with real world problems easily.
Hence, in short, the college faculties should try to work outside the academic world, so that students become well acquainted with practical aspects of the subjects. Also, the colleges should emphasize on the quality, rather than the quantity of the engineers and doctors, for they are the assets and future of a country.
