Do great achievements often lead to the greatest discontent? #1 (permalink) Sat Jun 19, 2010 20:20 pm   Do great achievements often lead to the greatest discontent?

A person always tries to achieve things, which are obscure and cumbersome. Achievements encourage him to perform better, and ameliorate his self confidence many-fold. An achievement over obscure and difficult things provides an ineffable joy, and a sense of self satisfaction. For instance, solving abstruse problems of mathematics or mechanics successfully, apart from increasing skills and ken of a student over the subjects, provide him a feeling of satisfaction and joy.

Achievements are not only associated with student life, they cover a huge gamut, and thus help in overall enlightenment of a society. E.g. Einstein’s achievements such as, the theory of relativity and the twin paradox, helped scientists to engender the string theory. Also, humans have developed nuclear power, which is relatively an efficient source of energy, as compared to conventional sources of energy. Countries like the USA and the UK, have achieved full employment level, and are therefore, entitled as developed countries.

Despite of the above stated facts, great achievements often lead to greatest discontent. Some dismal aspects often come along, as a bonus to great achievements, and thus reduce their overall value. Considering the above examples again, Einstein himself struggled for the last 25 years of his life, to explain complicacies and vastness of the universe, but unfortunately, he could not reach to a definite outcome. The dismal impact of his achievement is that, no scientist today has been able to solve those complicacies with clarity, and secrets of the universe still remain unrevealed. Nuclear power, in spite of being a better source of energy, also poses a threat to life, as toxic substances emitted from nuclear reactors, can decompose human body and its environment within minutes. In addition to this, the world economy, after a period of expansion and prosperity, encounters a period of depression and recession, which can leave big firms and developed countries insolvent. The developed European countries today face a period of great recession and bankruptcy. Although, the achievements were too big, but the after effects degraded their worth, and they finally ended in discontent.

Citing certain examples from the past to bolster the above facts, India's achievement of independence from the British Raj was great in itself, but the discontent that came along with it, was far more grave. Communal riots broke out, which claimed many lives, on and across the India-Pakistan border. India and Pakistan suffered partition on the one hand, and an economic crisis on the other, as many industries and small scale factories faced a major shut down. Furthermore, the allied forces were able to defeat Germany and Japan, in the World War II, which was indeed a great achievement. But the after effects of the atrocities of war were appalling and gruesome, as there was a huge loss of life and property, on the both sides. Cities were abandoned and desolated, and towns gave a dead and deserted look.

Hence, in short, great achievements although reflect the endeavour and diligent hard work, but they are often accompanied by greatest discontent. This discontent cannot be avoided for sure, but still, an effort can be made to reduce it considerably. Therefore, one must remember that, great achievements do possess a great cost.
