Should children begin learning a foreign language as soon as they start school? #1 (permalink) Mon Jun 21, 2010 14:46 pm   Should children begin learning a foreign language as soon as they start school?

In my country, some parents will send their children to a dual-language kindergarten to learn a second language, and others will let their children choose whether children would like to learn or not. In my opinion, I hold that disadvantages overweight advantages, and my views will be discussed as follows.

First and foremost, when children start to study at school, there are many new things entering their lives, and then, they have to learn more knowledge at school which parents cannot teach them at home. At that time, children start to stand the pressure, like peer pressure and school pressure. Therefore, if we force children to learn a second language they do not know before, that means, we give them more burdens. They will be confused, and may have a conflict in their minds. They may have a doubt why they have to learn a language they do not use in their daily lives, and maybe start to disgust at this second language.

Secondly, in my country, there is a profession who made her child study English while her child was little. And now, she starts to regret her action for the following reason. She pointed out that her child English ability, of course now, is better than other students'. Nevertheless, her child's mother tongue is far inferior to other peer. She described that her child usually misused the proverbs and words in compositions, or even in daily lives. She indicated that she focused on English learning so much that she neglected the foundation of native language then. As a result, her child’s native language level is obviously insufficient.

In conclusion, I do not agree with this idea which we should make children learn a foreign language as they start school. In my opinion, we should consolidate their foundations first, and next, let them learn a second language. I believe it definitely is a good way to motivate children to learn a foreign language.

Thank you for proofreading my composition.
