Should children start learning foreign language early? #1 (permalink) Tue Jun 22, 2010 5:32 am   Should children start learning foreign language early?

Topic: Should children start learning foreign language early?

Language is the best mean of communication, in the globalization era, the bigger number of languages you can speak the greater opportunities for you to be success in the future. A question is set that when does a person should start his second language studying? Although many people believe the most proper age is teenager, I strongly support the idea that children should begin learning a foreign language as soon as possible

Opponents of this position argue that children who are too young and develop incompletely do not have an ability to learn a second tongue substantially. Many parents are of the opinion that if their children study two languages at the same time then they will have low language ability, because they have to be separated their capabilities. However, according to a psychological research conducted by York University in Canada, scientists say that children do not confuse with two languages but learn them more effectively and comprehensively, and all children have the cerebral capacity to learn a second language in the first years of life. Moreover, bilingual children’s knowledge of a second language gives them an advantage in learning to read and write. Their ability to apply the insights and experiences of one language to the other as well as their wider experience of language give them a big leg up as they grow older.

On the other hand, critics of this position point out that early foreign language learning enable children to contact other culture too fast and too soon. Consequently, children might be negatively affected by foreign cultural backgrounds that lead to their own uncompleted and inconclusive cultural education. They might not be sufficiently educated about their own culture such as the lack of knowledges about their cultural heritages, traditional customs, etc. However, this opinion might not be true for many reasons. Studying a second tongue early enhances understanding and appreciation of children’s native language. Just as being in another country helps they better understand and appreciate their own, the same happens when they learn another language. Furthermore, learning a new language is the same meaning of discovering a new culture. This view means building and keeping cultural connections that brings to their life new memories, stories, heritages and traditions as well.

All of parents want their children to be talented and successful, thus, allowing them to experience the gift of learning a second language early is the best choice. What is more important is that early second language learning not only brings a number of obvious benefits for them but also lets them comprehend the beauty of the language

A good question Bk, which I will answer truthfully.

I was informed earlier today, by a university professor, that we should not begin a sentence/paragraph with a conjunction. Those words are conjunctions.

I am awaiting someone more intelligent than myself to disagree with this claim.

Thank you so much for asking this interesting question.
