"In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books."
The statement above reflects the present /condition/OPINION/THOUGHTS/ of the world. But something cannot be accepted simply because IT IS in vogue. Reading books is extremely important for the overall development of a personality(,) and in turn(,) development of society. Reading is not just a process of gaining information(,) but a treasure to be cherished and handed over to the next generation.
Books are a boon to the language in which they are written(,) and add to the greatness of the language. The more books one readS, better is ONE'S hold on the language one has. Television can deliver the message written in the book, but watching it cannot improve the language of the viewer. Language is the only tool for communication(,) and books help improve one's language. For example, while reading, if an unknown word is encountered, we either learn the meaning of it or guess it from the context. There is no option for such a learning process in television. Not just the meaning, but also the usage of a word, the style of using the language and depth of the language is construed through reading. Reading inculcates and improves THE creative ability of a person. Reading enables the reader TO visualize the event described; whereas television shows the outcome of someone else's creativity. Books make a person have varied perception of the same situation(,) and THEY NEED TO analyze the best out of it; this is achieved by reading books on THE same subject by different authors. Each one presents a different view(,) enabling the reader to have his/ her own view after analyzing many arguments. Only through reading a critic develops. A veracious reader can judge a television show; but the contrary is not prevalent yet. Television doES not cater to the needs of every individual. It is a mass media and sees to the interests of society as a whole. One can view the program only when it is being telecast. But books are companions; one can read whenever one wishES to. Books live for years; there is no end to THEM(,) but television programMES live only in that period OF BEING relayed. Some programs are available as cassettes; but they do NOT come under television. When it comes to reading, one has copious options in every part of a book; choices in the subject, the author, even the publisher. On the contrary(,) only specific channels and programs are available in television. The viewer has the option of at most changing the channel OR switching off the television
It is true that a picture is worth a thousand words. The picture can provide information(,) but the book introduce to the reader a world of innovation. A must- watch television show becomeS obsolete to the next generation; but a must-read book always remainS a must read . Thus, television can never replace the role of books. :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: A comprehensive essay LYN. Written with warmth and an obvious love of books.

Books was the only source of the knowledge but now there are alot of sources. TV, internet and computers are now more popular for people. The main reason is that these new sources give an information in a visible form with sound and may be in an interesting manner. Inspite of the threat of this new technology on books existence, books still used in all academic education . Also there are still alot of newspapers and magazines published daily morning and evening.
The new technology suport information with sound and motion which books can't do. The audience are using two senses instead of one sense. Therefor information will be more understandable. It stay in the mind for long time. The ability of representing information in an interesting manner is wide. Also TV gives information for either educated people and literal peopel. The audience don't need some time to be specialist just the moving pictures can discribe every thing.
However the technology of the TV is much popular for all people, the process of publishing new books still there. If we are talking about documented data that should be trusted, books are the only way of that. At university and all academic institute they relay on there information on books. Because most of the specialized field have been writen in books. The information in Books with copy right is much more trusted. It can be deal with as a scientific material. In my opinion this situation will remain as it is until people have a method that let them trust the technology more and more. |
